Grammar & Writing Level 5
Course Description  
In this course, students will study and practice the correct use of advanced grammar structures in both spoken and written situations. Students will work on improving their abilities to write a well-organized essay and use specific rhetorical patterns. Students will write formal summaries and have some understanding of and ability to summarize and paraphrase a passage. 

Course Objectives 

 After completing this course, the student will be able to:
◊ the following verb tenses:
-        present simple and progressive
-        past simple and progressive
-        simple future: “be going to” and “will”
-        present perfect and present perfect progressive
-        past perfect and past perfect progressive
-        future perfect and future perfect progressive
◊ noun clauses
◊ conditional sentence structures
◊ conjunctions, adverb clauses, adverb clause reductions, and connectives
◊ organize ideas with a well-constructed topic sentence, body with signal words, and conclusion in order to compose
four of the six following types of essays:
- Description of an abstract concept, such as wealth, success, love, happiness, etc.
- Classification
- Cause and effect
- Compare/Contrast
- Argumentative/Persuasive
- Summarizing, paraphrasing, synthesizing
- Reaction
◊ use grammar that reflects knowledge of verb tenses, noun clauses, conditional sentence structures, and adverb clauses
◊ use a variety of sentence structures, including both compound and complex sentences
◊ revise paragraphs for content, organization, language use, and mechanics.
◊ evaluate their writing progress through at least two journals or informal letters addressed to the instructor

Evaluation and Grading

In this course, you will be evaluated in the following way:

Writing 40%
Final Grammar Test 10%
Final Writing Test 10%
Homework and Active Participation 10%
Total 100%

NOTE: The Grammar Final will be on Wednesday of Week 10.

C+= 78 - 79%                 
C  = 73 - 77%

NOTE: You must pass
BOTH the grammar and writing with a 73% or above in order to pass this class.
